Faust

After Chaplin's the Kid I finally got around watching Faust this weekend. The movie was released in 1926 and weaves through plagues, faith, love and how devil takes over the soul and also tale of youth and desire.

If we get carried away with the lust, desire and aren't content with the present and keep chasing something that is meant to be in the past - it turns out to be harmful. It not only sets one's life on flames to burn away but also snatches other people's independence and autonomy.

Watching Mephisto placing the necklace at the girl Gretchen's place was a callback for me from Obsession - the wish willow! Like, I found that kinda similar that leads to each character's brutal end -that is much worse than any of them anticipated.

Even thou' it was a silent film it definitely captivated my interest totally - after thirty minutes. And the last hour of the film was quite cool and I enjoyed watching it, absolutely!

Faust's bargain with the devil takes us audience on hella of a ride. In 2026, as a GenZ I adored its message and the making.

Also, after chasing and indulging in all sort of pleasure, young Faust wants - home, simple things and eventually falls in love with a simple girl.

Intertitles were very insightful too! Those were so easy on the eyes - rather than the captions we see on reels these days getting bombarded on our faces...

What obsessions consume me right now? So many things I'll be thinking about in the week ahead...

Love reigns supreme! One word - LOVE!

Some trivial fact that I came across was that the actor who played Mephisto was the first actor to win Oscar - Best Actor and he was born in 1884..I mean, wow!

When I first saw the actress who played Gretchen - she reminded me of Phia Saban the actress who plays Halaena in House of the Dragon.

Gösta Ekman as Faust, Emil Jannings as Mephisto and Camilla Horn as Gretchen were absolutely brilliant! Director F. W. Murnau was amazing at capturing it all...
