Firstly, the ladies were so polished and walked around and tip toed with their heels on.
I was unable to see the movie dubbed in English; no subtitles were available too. Nonetheless, I was hooked! The version I saw I guess was in both spanish and french.
We lose out on the sweet moments of humanity when we envelope our entirety to technology. The whrums...and different noises. The fish fountain only spills water when some guest is arriving in. These days many love to put on some high tech wearables or carry phones and flaunt it over and over again and make an IMPRESSION on others. Maybe for validation or to keep the high status crown on the head which could be just an illusion.
With the tech boom we are seeing right now and the consumerism we like to bathe ourselves in - this movie from 1958 is a reminder how tech washes out subtle sounds, daily talks within families and other things that make our ambience.
With so much rigidity at the house, the little boy - isn't able to play when at home. It feels like consumerism or parents high tech-ism has somehow clutched his freedom.
We see this lady of the house is totally hands on with her high tech kitchen. For an outsider to find a water glass feels like a game of hide and seek.
We see how playful equation the uncle and his nephew have. He takes him on different rides and they get dirty and have fun and eat some street food. His uncle always has his back!
Uncles are so important in my life too. Their presence made my life more adventurous and safe at the same time. Going on hiking trips and cycling early in morning are some of the memories we share. Until middle school and during my University days too - my uncle used to pick me up to drop me home. I cherish our relationship so much.
Anyways, back to the movie, talking about beautiful cafes, roads and houses. I like the architecture of the place the movie uncle lives at. There are these stairs that really look exciting when we get a glimpse from outside. The uncle has this habit of setting an angle of his glass window and throw the sun's reflection upon the bird so the little bird gets overwhelmed and chirps. The uncle is very Jugaadu as we call it here. Very resourceful! haha.
Loved this film by Jacques Tati.
Reminder to take off your earphones every once in a while and listen to the voice that surrounds you. Otherwise they'll build data centre around me and you and we wouldn't be able to listen to birds chirping, dogs barking and rain sounds after a brutal summer...
Thanks for reading!
