I am gonna be selfish here and think about how I will be consuming websites and the internet.
I'll be speaking from that pov!
I think attention economy and AI bots want us to slather our hands with the convenience-sauce and call it a day. For me, personally, I am intentionally weening off of the behaviour that stunts my growth and just further makes a way to atrophy the brain.
The way I have been and will be consuming the internet in the future will be intentional and that won't sabotage my mental faculties. Although, AI can help me translate things faster when in different country - learning a language and its grammar, listening to songs and understanding words and expressing oneself in morning diary in the target language - well, that happiness is magical to feel. I have been soaking myself in that magical feelings in this Q2!
I think the culture of urgency has led everyone into the hole of burnout and everyone wants AI to figure out everything for them. Even bumble is gonna stop the swipe feature and let AI decide who I shall date. Well, since couple of years I am not using that app either because my eyes saw the CEO's interview where she stated the same ( She said - we are gonna let your AI pick a match for ya) ... and after two years it is becoming reality. AI is everywhere, but how intentional we are and how un-interested we are to automize the matters of heart and brain is something to think about. I am absolutely not interested to get on with it! To let AI be a matchmaker for me like that and not give me any space to explore MEN! Well well! Optimizing it further under the masquerade of productivity is the dark void where you won't find a soul on the other side. The journey is empty.
Dating industry has pin pointed the issue of dating fatigue and now no one wants to really hold a conversation. Similarly, everyone is okay with exploring what AI has to say and are tired to hold a conversation with the ether and go on - on the adventure - like exploring websites and different rabbit holes. I think capitalism is also responsible!
Like one might say doom scrolling to be productive rather than scooping up different parts of the web and connecting with the minds behind the sites and knowledge.
Attention economy never wanted you to get off of their pages and social media apps. They want to accumulate all the information and throw at you and not let the clicks go on and on. They want to lock us up and lick our attention further and further - until we start to feel drained and in limbo of what the hell is going on.
Many murderers have asked the chat bot to help them with planning etc. So not even killers are exploring websites for info but talking to a bot who claps for them all the time and doesn't even think of giving a heads up or share a disclaimer atleast about not doing such things. They all go with the flow and blow others life. A human being who might have curated such morbid information on the site - there is a high chance they'll atleast put a disclaimer about this and a mental health helpline number on top of the page. But does a bot do it? No! NYT has covered such brutal incidence extensively.
The one who needs saving is ourselves! How we walk down the paths - that internet has the ability to take us on! We just need to be aware and understand how it works and how wonderful and inspiring it is to go down the path and chase different nooks and corners.
The front page of search engine is just a corridor if you are using Google. Opening a chat bot app is your decision - it becoming your default mode is the momentum you are choosing. It is your choice!
Tasks for you to get into the zone of weening off of falling in love with AI summary and rather really being intentional-
1. Delete mainstream social apps ASAP. Delete the handle or delete it off your mobile.
2. Audit your media diet.
3. Start consuming long form works of arts.
4. Play with sites. Try simple html even thou it looks shitty...add into it as you go on and on. Avoid talking to AI at the very first go. Try doing yourself first! Our human brains actually love doing hard stuff. Even if you learn single line of coding that's cool too. Carry on the learning whenever you feel like it.
5. Put some work in the craft. Write, learn something new, stay amused by people who are doing awesome stuff with web, etc. Minds retain good info when writing and listening. So pen on paper while watching and consuming helps a lot.
6. Avoid getting into shorts and reels and such things.
7. RSS system! Get on it! As many say - it is such a delightful and quiet experience there. Less noise!
8. Do not aspire to become an influencer. That's not sustainable. Ask me how I know!?
9. Webrings, blogroll, community friends, Indieweb community, etc - explore explore!
10. Don't block yourself and your freedom by SEOfying or AEOfying for god's sake!
At my work, I had a client who literally copy pasted everything from ChatGPT as a brief and sent it to me. Like this "brief sounds professional and friendly" to the start "Here is..." and with so many "**** ****"like from top to bottom - the person didn't even edit it a little bit and then share. That's what is happening when I see things! Like now that's how it works...
Using so much of AI bot and then Meta glasses to click pictures and it lets one know what they are seeing and then keeping on charging that thing.. so it lasts four hours!? omg! Anyone who knows me - knows well how much I hate adding on devices around me that keeps on needing charging all the time. Do I carry wireless earbuds!? No! I do not want to charge my earphones...too
Well, I digressed too much didn't I!? haha...I promise I ain't hallucinating like a bot you very much call your bestie these days...I am just about to go to bed...like a human!
This late night rambling session was inspired by the discussion happened today at IndieWeb Camp Nürnberg 2026. I joined later in the day today but as always it was amazing..
